Math Bowling
Wednesday, March 05, 2008 - Debi Dutton

Around this time of year, cabin fever can easily begin.  This is an activity oriented game that can keep a child's mind and body involved.  Invite a child to join in this variation of bowling where the rules can be changed to fit your own child's math level.

  • Math bowling can be played with 2 or more people.

  • Plastic cups or empty plastic bottles can be used for the pins but to personalize the game try this idea.  You will need 10 small acrylic plastic picture frames.   4 x 6 frames are used here since that is a common size  photo.  Look for sales or close-out prices on frames.

  • Choose 10 vertical photos.  With a child select photos of family members or friends of your child to insert into the frames since they will enjoy “bowling” them over.

  • Next set up the frames as you would pins in bowling – one in the front, then a row of 2, 3 and finally 4 frames.  A non-carpeted flour works best.

  • Set the frames close together as you want lots of the frames to fall, thus using more addition skills.

  • The point values of the frames could be the same as in bowling (1 to 10 points) and stickers on the bottom of the frames could show the value.  If  you don't want to use pictures just insert cards numbered 1 through 10 in each frame.

  • I like to bowl by counting  by 5's and 3's for a different option using the pictures.

  • Using a tennis or soft ball, the first roll knocking down the frames receive 5 points for every frame knocked down.  The second roll receives 3 points for every frame knocked down. After the second roll all the frames are set-up again and the next player has a turn.

  • You can easily keep score on a sheet of paper or a dry erase board.  Allow each player the same number of turns, usually 5 to 10 and see who has the highest score at the end.

  • Encourage a child to place the frames and do the scoring.

This little bit of learning can be just the activity needed to put some fun into math while sharing time together.
