READING - Discovering the Importance of VOWELS
Friday, January 05, 2007 - A Little Bit of Learning

When a child becomes a reader they need to focus on words. They discover that every word has a vowel. Any “reader” can play – just adjust the choice of reading materials.

  •

Select an age appropriate book or magazine that the child can read.
  • Beforehand, copy a sentence from the book, OMITTING all the vowels.
  • Give the child the paper and let him fill in the missing vowels with a pencil.
  • Compare to the original sentence to see that the correct vowels were added.

The idea works just as well by trading roles.

  • This time let a child copy a sentence from the book omitting the vowels.
  • Now hand to an adult who gets to fill in the vowels.
  • This can be a wonderful party or group game by making copies for all participants and see who can fill in the vowels the fastest or place the players into teams.

Thinking skills are needed for this activity and it also helps with spelling skills.
