Watermelon Lemonade
July, 2001 - Debi Dutton

The theme for this activity is WATERMELON. For this idea – select and buy a watermelon with seeds.

  • For a math activity, cut a slice of watermelon and let a child estimate how many seeds are in the slice. Next, remove the seeds and count to see how close he was to the estimated number of seeds. Save the seeds.
  • Next, show how to paint your own slice of watermelon. Use a small or large paper plate and paint the inside red and green on the edge.
  • When dry, let your child cut the plate in half and write a number on the edge up to 10.
  • Encourage a child to say the number written on the painted watermelon slice and place the correct number of seeds on the slice.
  • Cut the watermelon into small cubes with a plastic knife and save to make Watermelon Lemonade.
