Handmade Personalized Candle Holders
November, 2001 - Debi Dutton

During the holiday season, family dinners become very special. This idea will help everyone find their correct place at the table. The children will be making candle holders with names to show where each person will sit at the table.

  • You will need empty small baby food jars, seasonal and alphabet stickers, white glue, small paint brush, ribbon, and tea light candles.
  • Using the alphabet stickers, make the name of a dinner guest on a baby food jar. You can add seasonal stickers on the opposite side.
  • Paint the jar with a light coat of white glue for a frosty look. Let dry.
  • Add ribbon on the jar neck and place a candle inside.
  • Have a child place the jars on the table with the names showing where each guest will be sitting and light the candle when dinner is served.

Crafts are wonderful ways to teach children skills. Very young children can point to the letters needed to spell a name and placing stickers on the jar uses eye-hand coordination. If your house is where the family gathers, have all the materials ready for the children to make these while waiting for dinner. This is an easy way to include everyone in preparing for a special dinner.
