Sand Painting
July, 2003 - Debi Dutton

Another way to use sand for gifts is to make sand paintings. By making these outside on a table or in the grass, clean-up is so easy!!!!! You can use sand from your favorite spot or purchase from garden center.

  • Sand is easy to color with dry tempura paint.
  • Place sand in a plastic sandwich bag or plastic tub and add enough dry paint to color to desired shade.
  • Shake the sand and paint until evenly mixed.
  • One gift is to make layers of colored sand in a glass container to use as a paperweight.
  • All sizes and shapes of containers work well and use a funnel to add sand to container.
  • We made a paper weight from a small container using a child’s school colors of brown and gold.
  • Another gift can be made by sand painting.
  • On poster weight paper, paint a picture with glue. Decide which color you want and paint just that area with glue.
  • Shake that color of sand onto the glue.
  • Any excess sand can be shaken off.
  • Proceed by painting with glue for the next color and again tap paper upside down to get rid of excess sand.

A young child may want to draw a picture first with crayons on a separate sheet of paper and then copy the design with the glue and sand. This makes a nice way to say thank you for time spent at the lake or beach.
