Valentine’s Day is a special day to remind children how much they are loved. One way for children to know they are unique is to display pictures and artwork. This activity of making a personal tile trivet is a reminder that each child has value in a family.
You will need a glazed white tile – size to be determined by child’s drawing. ( 8 x 8 square in a home building supply store cost under a $1.00)
Trace on plain paper around the tile and let the child plan the design on the paper. Discuss what is to be included – pictures, the wording, colors to use, etc. You can draw around a young child’s hand if he is to young to draw. Ask a child to write the alphabet or numbers and date and sign when created for a wonderful keepsake.
Once design is decided, draw on the tile using acrylic paint markers that work on pottery and ceramics (Painters by Hunt Corporation). These are found in craft stores.
To use as a hot plate – cover after paint has dried with two coats of a clear gloss glaze. (Delta CeramDecor –Air-Dry Perm Enamel for tile, glass, and ceramic is what I used)
